Employers often see a resume gap due to caregiving as a career liability. But research shows that caregiving cultivates the specific skills that employers report they need most, such as adaptability and empathy. At a time when artificial intelligence is expanding throughout the workplace, these uniquely human skills are vital. It's time for employers to reframe how they think about caregivers and tap into the value of caregiving skills. They can start by prioritizing four specific actions. In early 2025, more than 212,000 women left the U.S. workforce following a rise in return-to-office mandates, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Among mothers with young children, workforce participation dropped nearly three percentage points in just six months, according to the BLS.
