That's a quote from a friend of mine who, like me, devotes a lot of his life to following the news and commenting on it. We have a habit of texting each other throughout the day when news breaks, to try and figure how bad the event really is in American and global context. More and more often, one or the other of us will close out the discussion by saying something like the quote above. We say it half-seriously'amazed at a certain level by just how much ruin there is in our nation (and the world) right now, but also aware of just how far the U.S. has to fall, given our power, the size of our economy, and all the relationships we've built up over the past 80 years.
