This week: why the UN's 2.8'C is a portfolio number, why I reported Google to Konsumentverket over a 'carbon neutral' claim it abandoned years ago, and Europe's deadliest summer for heat. Here's the front page. Paid subscribers can download the full newspaper edition at the bottom of this post. This week the UN said out loud what markets still will not price. Its Emissions Gap Report puts current policies on track for 2.8'C of warming this century. Even if every country delivered every pledge, we get 2.6'C. For the first time, UNEP calls breaching 1.5'C unavoidable. The gap is not small. Staying on the lowest overshoot path needs emissions 18% below 2025 levels by 2030, 45% by 2035 and 69% by 2040. That is a cut of 5.7% a year. Full delivery of today's pledges gives 5'8% by 2030 and 11'15% by 2035. The best case now is an overshoot. Warming peaks at 1.7'1.8'C around mid-century and returns to 1.5'C by 2100 only if about 320 gigatonnes of CO' are pulled out of the air and stored....
