The media is an important contributor to how societies perceive, act, respond and relate amongst themselves. Culture is a tool that directly or indirectly impacts on how people communicate and interact among themselves. The relationship between the media and culture of societies today is a thin line to differentiate. The role of the media cannot be underestimated as it transforms contents through connection and conversation; enables people to share, comment and to discuss a wide variety of topics; provides opportunities for professional online networking; offers journalists to engage with greater audiences and spread maximum information; helps to inform people about events from local to global ones as well as serve as a means of communication. Communication cannot take place without media and the values and principles of a society affect how people communicate and interact. The study explored the relationship between media and culture. It focused on how language as an aspect of culture plays an integral role in the evolution of media technology; the paper further sought to explore how culture influences the media as technology currently plays an integral role in the media landscape. The methodology included the use of content analysis and descriptive study. A sample of twenty participants were used and the method was of a focus group discussion. During the focus group session, participants agreed that media technology especially social media platform has influenced how they communicate and the kind of words they use. The culture (language) of the people also influence how they are receptive to certain media technology. For people who were socialized with other cultures, they were more receptive to new things and adaptable. These people see language as an influential tool in the kind of media technology they interact with. Media technology (the use of emojis) has influenced them on how they sometimes express emotions and understand the feelings of others. Media technology is now critical in the information acquisition and the spread of information; however, people use media technology to spread false news, tarnishing the reputations of others and spreading false news about certain individuals which breeds animosity amongst people. learn more on SSRN
